Hi John

Just a few weeks ago, we exposed that industrial supertrawlers spent nearly 3000 hours last year fishing in parts of UK waters that are supposed to be protecting vulnerable marine life. [1] In the short space of time since, over 200,000 people have signed a petition calling on the UK Government to ban supertrawlers from fishing in our Marine Protected Areas.

To keep the pressure on the Government we're now calling on politicians, scientists and NGOs to sign an open letter supporting the ban. Can you ask your MP to add their name too?

It's obvious - huge supertrawlers with nets up to a mile long, catching hundreds of tonnes of fish everyday, have no business fishing in areas designed to protect vulnerable marine habitats and species. If we want our oceans to recover and thrive, we need to make sure they are protected.

We're joining up with other NGOs, scientists and key figures to urge the government to properly protect our MPAs by banning supertrawlers and other destructive fishing from them. Adding the support of MPs from all parties will make the letter hard to ignore.

Can you ask your MP to sign the open letter calling for supertrawlers and other destructive fishing to be banned from the UK's Marine Protected Areas?

Public opinion - and science - is on our side. Allowing supertrawlers to fish in our Marine Protected Areas damages marine life, depletes fish stocks, and threatens the livelihoods of those who depend on our seas.

We need to protect our oceans.

Thank you for everything you do

Anthony and the Oceans team.
