Dear neighbors,

I am devastated, and I am angry. Yesterday, Renee Nicole Good [ [link removed] ], a member of our community, was shot and killed by a federal ICE agent in the heart of our city [ [link removed] ], one day after the federal government deployed over 2,000 federal agents to Minneapolis.

Shortly after the shooting, I went to the scene. What I saw was heartbreaking. I’m a mom, and I know a mom’s car. On Renee’s seat, where she was killed, were stuffed animals and toys for her child. Today, that child woke up without their parent. No family should have to deal with this.

That same day, ICE agents came onto school property at Roosevelt High [ [link removed] ] and began tackling people, handcuffing two staff members, and releasing chemical weapons on bystanders. MPS has had to close schools for the rest of the week [ [link removed] ] to protect kids from the dangerous actions of ICE in our communities.

Last night, I joined State Senator Omar Fateh on CNN to discuss the ongoing situation, which you can view here [ [link removed] ].

This follows months of the federal government unleashing chaos and terror in our neighborhoods. ICE has kidnapped residents, dragged a pregnant woman across the pavement, and pepper-sprayed a baby. Now, their effort to terrorize our community has resulted in a death.

I am demanding that ICE leave our city and face accountability for their unlawful, violent, and oppressive actions. None of this is about public safety — in fact, ICE is destabilizing our communities and making us all less safe. All of us are just trying to live our lives — and masked men are coming in, arresting people without cause, racially profiling our neighbors, and wreaking havoc. They’re on a dangerous power trip, and it has to stop.

At this time, I ask our community to stay safe, not buy the propaganda from Homeland Security, and look out for one another. I am so thankful for our community who has showed up, peacefully protested, and lifted up Renee’s legacy.

In the coming days, we will do everything we can to protect each other from this hostile federal government, and to demand justice. I will continue to work with city, county, and state leaders to keep Minnesotans safe and to demand accountability for what has transpired in our city.

Here’s a list of resources and actions to help our community in this time: [ [link removed] ]
