Statement from CT GOP Chairman Ben Proto on DOJ Lawsuit Against Connecticut

Middletown, CT — Connecticut Republican Party Chairman Ben Proto today issued the following statement in support of the U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit against the State of Connecticut for its failure to provide unredacted voter information as required by federal law:

“The Department of Justice is right to take legal action against the State of Connecticut. Federal law is not optional. The National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) exist for one reason: to ensure accurate voter rolls and to protect the integrity of our elections. Connecticut Democrats have repeatedly failed to meet those obligations and, more importantly, to take election and voter roll integrity seriously.

Under the NVRA, states are required to conduct reasonable and transparent programs to maintain accurate voter registration lists and to make records related to those efforts publicly available for inspection (52 U.S.C. S 20507). Connecticut’s refusal to provide unredacted voter information is a clear violation of both the letter and the spirit of that law.

HAVA further requires states to maintain a single, uniform, official, centralized statewide voter registration list and to ensure that the list is accurate, current, and free of ineligible registrations (52 U.S.C. S 21083). That obligation includes verifying eligibility and ensuring that only Connecticut citizens with the legal right to vote are on our voter rolls.

Democrat officials in Connecticut have stonewalled lawful requests for this information. Instead of transparency, they have chosen secrecy. Instead of accuracy, they have chosen complacency and political manipulation of voter lists. Instead of protecting voters’ confidence in our elections, they have chosen to hide information from the public and ignore their legal responsibilities.

Let’s be clear: this lawsuit is not about voter suppression. It is about voter integrity. Every eligible citizen has the right to vote, but only eligible citizens have that right. Maintaining clean, accurate voter rolls is not optional; it is a legal requirement and a moral obligation.

The consequences of Democrats’ indifference to election integrity are already evident. The massive election fraud uncovered in Bridgeport, continually conducted by Democrats, ignored by Democrat leadership, and dismissed for months until it became impossible to deny, should have shocked this state into action. Instead, the Democrats minimized, excused, and swept it aside. That failure to take election integrity seriously has directly contributed to the erosion of public trust and has now forced federal intervention.

If Connecticut Democrats have nothing to hide, they should stop acting like they are trying to hide something. Transparency strengthens democracy. Secrecy undermines it.

The Connecticut Republican Party fully supports the Department of Justice’s efforts to enforce federal law and hold Connecticut accountable. To put it simply, our elections should be decided by eligible voters, and only eligible voters. Anything short of that is a disservice to every honest voter in this state.

It is time for Connecticut Democrats to stop obstructing and start complying with the law. It is time for them to start to take election integrity seriously.”
