Victory! Michigan Supreme Court ends home equity theft

In a momentous victory for homeowners and their property rights, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled on July 17 that counties may not steal the savings that people stored away in their homes.

Until last week, Michigan counties could seize property from those who fall behind on their taxes—like Uri Rafaeli, whose tax debt was a mere $8.41—and then sell the property for amounts much larger than the initial debt and pocket all of the proceeds from the sale. This practice was ended by the state’s high court; now PLF’s fight moves to the other 12 states that allow home equity theft.

Personal care providers in California may still offer outdoor services during the new shutdown

California’s newly reopened barbers, stylists, and other personal care providers faced another total shutdown when Governor Gavin Newsom halted indoor personal care services in 30 counties due to rising COVID-19 cases. And the state Board of Barbering and Cosmetology dashed any hopes of providing these services outdoors with threats of criminal penalties or even loss of a license.

Pacific Legal Foundation sprang into action with a letter to Governor Newsom and the board urging them to reconsider. On Monday, the California Department of Public Health ordered that barbers, stylists, and other personal care providers can take their business outdoors, giving them help and hope for survival beyond the pandemic.
