John, Governor Ron DeSantis just officially called for a special legislative session in Florida in April to enact a mid-decade gerrymander.

That’s despite the fact that a majority of Floridians say they reject Republicans’ push for a mid-decade redraw of their maps.

Florida is already one of the most gerrymandered states in the nation. Nonetheless, Republicans have set their sights on the Sunshine State as their #1 target to tip the midterms in Trump’s favor:

After their efforts to gerrymander in Indiana failed, they’ve turned their attention to passing an even more manipulated map in Florida to try to rig the midterm elections and cling to power in the U.S. House of Representatives.

We need to be clear about what’s happening here: Republicans know their policies are wildly unpopular. They know they can't win fair and square. So they're trying to circumvent the will of the people to help Donald Trump keep his grip on power. And they believe Florida is their best chance to make this happen.

In this announcement, DeSantis said he wanted to wait for “guidance” from the Supreme Court. It’s clear he’s banking on the assumption that the Court will gut the Voting Rights Act in the weeks ahead, opening the door for states like Florida to gerrymander even more egregiously.

As the leading organization fighting for fair maps, the NDRC exists to take on fights like this. This is shaping up to be our biggest challenge since Texas. That means we’ll need to use every tool at our disposal to stop this power grab in Florida.
