John,
The White House says I have “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” I say defending the Constitution isn’t a disorder – it’s the job.
Yesterday, I said something on the record that should not be controversial: When Donald Trump jokes about canceling or disrupting the midterms, we should take him seriously. History shows that when he says he is going to do something bad, he usually ends up doing something worse.
And after ordering surprise military strikes in Venezuela — an operation carried out without a plan, without honesty, and without legal authority — Trump walked onto a stage in Washington and joked about canceling the midterms.
That is not funny. And it is not a joke.
Instead of responding to the facts or explaining why the President thinks he has the authority to both start wars and “delay” elections, the White House attacked me personally and avoided every substantive question.

I am simply repeating what the President has said publicly, on multiple occasions:
* He joked about canceling midterms
* He joked about staying in power without elections
* He suggested war could justify blocking elections
* He claimed the “fake news” would call him a dictator
Now, he is installing leaders he personally prefers and deciding when other countries are “allowed” to hold elections again. That should concern every American who believes voters — not presidents — decide when we have elections and who wins them.
I served in Iraq during the forever wars, and I have sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution. That oath does not change based on who is in power. It does not expire when the truth becomes inconvenient. And it certainly does not disappear because a White House spokesperson wants to score points on cable news.
This campaign exists to tell the truth about threats to our democracy and to challenge leaders in both parties who would rather shrug and hope for the best.
If you agree that we need leaders who will not wait six more years to confront these threats, I am asking you to join this fight: [[link removed]]
