Email from Los Angeles Police Protective League Daily News & Updates   Law Enforcement News 2 LAPD officers hurt while chasing suspects in North Hollywood Two Los Angeles police officers were hurt while chasing after suspects in North Hollywood. The officers started following the suspects after spotting their stolen vehicle. Shortly after the pursuit began, the suspects ditched the car in the 11100 block of Archwood Place and ran away from the officers. The Los Angeles Fire Department said they were dispatched to the area at 9:54 p.m. Paramedics took the two officers and another person to the hospital. At least two people appeared to be in custody at about 10:10 p.m. CBS 2 L.A. sees lowest homicide rate in decades — but why killings are down is up for debate The city of Los Angeles just recorded its lowest homicide total in more than half a century, mirroring precipitous drops in many other large cities nationwide last year — and sparking a range of theories about what’s going on. According to tentative numbers reported by the LAPD through Dec. 31, the city tallied 230 homicides in 2025 — a nearly 19% decrease from the year before. Police investigators are still reviewing the circumstances of several deaths, but if the current figure holds up, it would be the fewest killings since 1966, when the population was almost 30% smaller. Measuring per capita, it was the city’s safest year since 1959. LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said the reduction in homicides is “not the result of any single action, but the collective work of our first responders and follow-up investigators, our community partners, and the residents who continue to step forward and engage with us.” Los Angeles Times Shooting in Sylmar leaves one dead, one injured A man was killed and a woman was injured in a shooting in Sylmar Thursday morning, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. KTLA 5 Almost 100 drivers caught speeding over 100 mph around New Year’s, CHP says Nearly 100 drivers were caught speeding over 100 mph by the California Highway Patrol around the New Year’s Day holiday, the agency announced. Between 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 11:59 p.m. Jan. 1, CHP officers handed out more than 5,400 tickets, including 2,792 for speeding, the agency said in a news release. Officers also cited 92 people for driving more than 100 mph and arrested 379 people on suspicion of driving under the influence. There were also six fatal crashes within the CHP’s jurisdiction, the agency said, with speeding, impaired driving and failure to wear seat belts as leading factors. Under a new program, Forwarded Actions for Speeding Tickets, a joint effort by the Department of Motor Vehicles and the CHP, Californians who are caught speeding at more than 100 mph will face new disciplinary actions that could include losing driving privileges. Every driver who is ticketed by the CHP for going over 100 mph, regardless of their driving record, has their citation automatically forwarded to the DMV’s Driver Safety Branch under the program launched last month. The DMV reviews the case and the driver’s history to determine next steps, with the ability to impose penalties that could include the suspension or revocation of driving privileges. Los Angeles Times California tightens penalties for disaster looting, fake first responders New California laws strengthening penalties for disaster looting and the impersonation of firefighters, police officers, and other emergency personnel are now in effect, targeting crimes that often surge during wildfires and other declared emergencies, officials said. The measures, signed into law last October by Gavin Newsom, are intended to protect evacuated communities and prevent criminals from exploiting chaos during and after disasters. The changes stem from two companion bills: Assembly Bill 468 strengthens penalties for looting during a declared emergency and extends those penalties into the recovery and rebuilding phase, when neighborhoods may still be vacant or unsecured. Senate Bill 571 reinforces penalties for people who impersonate firefighters, law enforcement officers, or other officials during emergencies. Lawmakers say the bills were designed to close gaps that previously limited enforcement once an immediate emergency declaration expired. KTLA 5 D.C. officer dies 2 weeks after being severely injured in crash D.C. Bennett was standing outside his marked cruiser when a secondary vehicle hit him. The driver who struck him remained at the scene and was later treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The motorist in the disabled vehicle was not hurt. Bennett died from his injuries on Jan. 7, just over two weeks after the incident. His death marks the 127th line-of-duty death in the department’s history, according to the report.
