Dear Friend,
Last month I spent five hours as a guest of the U.S. Capitol Police. I was one of 71 Catholics arrested in the rotunda of the Russell Senate building in Washington, D.C., for “crowding, obstructing, or incommoding” while praying the rosary. My prayer was — and is — to end the warehousing of immigrant children in cages —seven of whom have died after being in federal custody since September 2018.
I’ve been arrested more than 30 times for nonviolent civil disobedience throughout my life, because I believe that when laws become so egregious that life and creation are at risk, then the moral imperative is clear: Disobedience in the face of what is inhuman is a personal, religious, and social virtue to increase the good.
Sojourners stands for what I stand for: sacred obedience, prophetic action, and always putting Christ before political agendas. Can I count on you to join us? What risks will you take to stand up for what’s right?
Our movement for faith in action for social justice needs your voice — and that’s why I’m asking you to give a gift to Sojourners today.
With your gift of $25 or more, you’ll receive a Sojourners mug (pictured below).
