The 20th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP20) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in Samarkand, Uzbekistan ended in early December. With the exception of the outcome for saiga antelopes, the meeting delivered positive outcomes for EIA’s focal species, mostly involving preventing backwards slides in the level of protection afforded by CITES. There was sometimes a lack of urgency reflected in the decisions adopted, despite the crisis for some species.
