What happened in Minneapolis yesterday is heartbreaking and unconscionable.
ICE agents brutally murdered Renee Nicole Good while she was in her car. She should be alive today. Her family should not be grieving. And our communities should not be living in fear.
This is exactly what happens when cruelty is at the very core of your agenda. This is what happens when you try to normalize the presence of the military on American streets.
Donald Trump has pushed a vision of America that uses fear as a political tool. Sending armed agents to attack our neighbors and instill fear in our communities has never made us safer. And now a woman is dead, a U.S. citizen, at the hands of our federal government because we have a president who is trying to distract from his failures.
This has never been about fixing our broken immigration system. It has been about power, distraction, and dehumanization.
Trump and Kristi Noem are lying to the American people and trying to tell us that our own eyes are deceiving us. But we know the truth. And no lies they tell will convince us otherwise.
Renee Nicole Good should be alive right now. Silverio Villegas González should be alive right now.
Enough is enough.
Rejecting authoritarianism should not be a death sentence in the United States of America. We need ICE out of our communities. NOW. And we need U.S. Senators who will fight to get them out.
That’s why I’m running for Congress: to stand up to the militarization of our cities, to demand accountability, and to fight for an immigration system rooted in dignity, safety, and humanity. But I can’t fight this fight alone.
