The Senate today advanced a War Powers Resolution aimed at reining in President Trump’s military campaign in Venezuela.
A measure to discharge the resolution from committee passed in a 52-47 vote, with five Republicans — Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Todd Young (Ind.), Rand Paul (Ky.), Josh Hawley (Mo.), and Lisa Murkowski (Ala.) — joining the Democratic caucus in moving the measure forward.
Sen. Paul himself urged his colleagues to support the measure in a piece for RS this week ([link removed]) . “Meaningful checks and balances require the president’s party to stand up to and resist unconstitutional usurpations of power,” he said ([link removed]) .
RS reporter Stavroula Pabst notes ([link removed]) , “If the final full Senate vote falls along the same lines, it will mark the first time since 2020 that the Senate has moved to restrict the president’s ability to use force abroad.”
More exclusive RS coverage of Trump’s war on Venezuela:
* Author Jack Cheevers looks back at JFK’s experience in Vietnam and writes ([link removed]) that before Trump decides to escalate his campaign in Venezuela, “he should carefully study the U.S. record on removing foreign leaders.”
* QI’s Anatol Lieven adds ([link removed]) that Trump’s gambits in both Venezuela and Greenland are sloppy, self-sabotaging versions of what great powers have done previously to exert regional influence.
* While some say ([link removed]) that U.S. companies exploiting Venezuela's oil (as Trump has said he wants them to) won’t be easy, other American companies appear to be jumping ([link removed]) at the investment opportunity.
* Meanwhile, U.S. weapons suppliers saw an early stock price boost ([link removed]) after U.S. military forces captured Nicoals Maduro.
* Eldar Mamedov took Europe to task for its weak response to Trump’s invasion, calling it a “masterpiece of evasion ([link removed]) .”
* And finally, the Stimson Center’s Dan Grazier and Benjamin Gedan warn Trump ([link removed]) not to get too cocky after the initial military “success” in ousting Maduro.
