John,
After the military operation in Venezuela, one big question came to our minds: Where has Congress been all of this time?
Per our Constitution, Congress is the top dog when it comes to war powers.
So it was concerning when the United States government overthrew a foreign leader in Venezuela last week without consultation with Congress — and in fact after misleading them for months about the goals of our Venezuela policy.
But today, senators from both sides of the aisle took a stand.
52 senators — including 5 Republicans — voted to advance a resolution that would block President Trump from “using military force ‘within or against Venezuela’ unless he gets prior approval from Congress.” [1]
This is huge. These members of Congress finally took a stand to protect their constitutional authority and for our system of checks and balances.
However, this isn’t the end of the line. The resolution now goes to the Senate floor for a vote. But we want to make sure that the senators who voted to advance the resolution know that we applaud them for taking a stand.
Send a letter of support to your senator (or senators!) who voted to advance this resolution!
Your voice matters,
