Neghat
A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan

*Happy New Year and welcome to our first newsletter of 2026. *I hope you had the chance to enjoy the festive period and spend time with the people who matter most to you.

As we begin the year, we’re experiencing a cold start, with multiple weather warnings currently in place. Please do take extra care, look out for one another, and stay safe during the cold weather, especially when travelling or spending time outdoors.

Despite the wintry conditions, there is a great deal to look forward to in the year ahead. We begin 2026 with our *first Council meeting on Monday 12 January*, where important decisions and discussions about the city’s future will take place. Meetings are open and transparent, and I would encourage anyone who is interested to watch along online.

* You can view the meeting live or afterwards on the Nottingham City Council YouTube channel [ [link removed] ]
* The papers for the meeting are available in advance and can be viewed on our website [ [link removed] ].

Thank you for your continued interest, engagement and support. I wish you all a safe, healthy and positive start to the year ahead.

Amber Snow Warning
❄️ Amber snow warning in place for Nottingham

With snow expected and very cold temperatures are already here. We’re sharing simple steps to help everyone stay safe and well:

* Check in on older neighbours, friends and anyone who may be vulnerable
* Stay informed by checking local weather forecasts and travel updates
* Keep homes as warm as possible and wear warm clothing indoors
* Seek support early if you’re worried about health or wellbeing – via NHS 111 or a local pharmacy
* Bin collections may be disrupted in some areas due to icy conditions – if your bin isn’t collected, please leave it out and we’ll return as soon as it’s safe to do so

Our teams are working with partners to monitor conditions, and we’ll continue to share updates and practical advice through our official channels.

Please take extra care and look out for one another.

Gritting information
gritting

Our gritters are out daily, and often do repeat runs when conditions are bad.

* *See the full routes that we grit here [ [link removed] ]*
* *Find your nearest grit bin here [ [link removed] ]*
* *Learn more about how gritting works here [ [link removed] ]*

Grit is helpful, but sadly not magical and in certain conditions (colder than -5, early in the morning before traffic has driven over it and crushed it) - it doesn't work nearly as well. It also can't prevent snow from settling or ice from forming when it's very cold.

As ever, your responsibility as a motorist is to be prepared, consider how essential your journey is and drive to the conditions - stay safe Nottingham!

Please Stay Safe Around Frozen Lakes and Ponds

With the chilly temperatures, some lakes and ponds in our parks are frozen. While they can seem tempting, please don’t walk, skate, or let children or dogs go onto the ice.

Ice is often thinner than it appears and can be very dangerous if it gives way. Falling into icy water can cause cold water shock, and any rescue attempts can put others at risk.

Please remember:

* Keep well back from frozen lakes and ponds
* Supervise children closely
* Keep dogs on leads near the water
* If someone or a pet gets into trouble, call 999 and ask for the Fire & Rescue Service

🌿 Stay safe and enjoy our parks 🌿

Working Together to Strengthen Fostering

Local authorities across Nottinghamshire are working together to strengthen fostering services and ensure children and young people receive the stable, loving homes they deserve.

Nottingham City Council and partner councils are collaborating to improve recruitment, support foster carers and share best practice – helping more children stay closer to home and within their communities.

By joining forces, councils are building a stronger, more resilient fostering system that puts children at the heart of everything they do.
