[link removed] [[link removed]] Hi again, it’s Sarah here.
Service means everything to me, and it’s a calling I’ve felt for my whole life – as a minister, a mother, a nonprofit leader, and now as a State Senator.
I’d like to tell you a bit more about my story and how my journey has led me to running for Congress here in IA-03. And at the end of this, I’m going to ask you to support my campaign too. ( If you’re already on board, though, can you contribute below? Thanks! [[link removed]] )

Early on, my call to service led me to join AmeriCorps in Gallup, New Mexico. I didn’t have a place to live when I moved there, but I quickly got settled and devoted a year of my life to supporting victims of domestic violence as an AmeriCorps VISTA program volunteer.
It wasn’t an easy experience, but I saw so many resilient people facing tremendous challenges, and I decided to devote my life to helping more people overcome these difficult moments.
My time in New Mexico made me want to learn about what in my religious tradition could help people in need. So, I went back to school to get my Master’s of Divinity and later worked as a chaplain in a hospital. There, I supported families as they faced unimaginable challenges with hope, bravery, and compassion. From them, I learned what true courage looks like.
That’s where I decided to become a minister. My first congregation was a small country church in one of the most conservative and rural counties in Virginia. We didn’t agree on much politically, but we shared the values of our faith, and together we were able to do amazing things in our community.
Through these experiences, I learned something powerful that I carry with me every single day: we are always stronger together.
When I came to Iowa, I served a suburban church in Des Moines. After a few years, I was called to take my ministry out into the community. In order to help those I saw struggling day by day, I began working at a local food pantry network. In that work I brought communities together across interfaith lines to address food insecurity, all while preaching in churches across Iowa on the weekends. I like to joke that I’m everyone’s favorite Lutheran minister—from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to Iowa’s growing Hindu community.
In 2020, I saw firsthand how my elected officials were failing the families in my community. And I knew I had to do something about it.
When my Republican State Senator tried to ban abortion, I confronted him at the state capitol and asked him about the dangerous effects of his bill on women with ectopic pregnancies, and he replied, “what’s an ectopic pregnancy?"
I realized then that if I wanted someone to fight for my community, I needed to run myself. And that’s exactly what I did, I ran against that State Senator and won. Two years later, after redistricting split my seat in half, I had to choose between primarying one of my Democratic colleagues or selling my house and moving to take on the Republican State Senate President. He was threatening teachers with jail time, and I knew we needed to stand up to him. So I moved, I took him on, and I won. In 2024, I faced my toughest election yet, and after knocking on tens of thousands of doors in my community, I won by just 29 votes, even as President Trump carried my district. Now, my call to service continues. Zach Nunn is avoiding our district and wreaking havoc on our community, all to please his billionaire allies and extremists in Washington who fund his trips to Mar-a-Lago. Public service shouldn’t be about political favors, and Iowa families deserve so much better than Nunn.
So I’m rolling up my sleeves because I know we can build the movement we need to flip this seat blue and deliver real change for our community. If you’re with me, can you please chip in to my campaign today? We have a long road ahead of us, and it’ll mean a lot to know you’re with me. [[link removed]]
