Voto Latino is outraged by reports of a fatal shooting involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis — a horrifying incident that underscores the escalating and dangerous overreach of federal immigration enforcement. [[link removed]]

In response to this tragic incident, Voto Latino President and Co-Founder María Teresa Kumar issued the following statement:

“What happened today in Minneapolis is unconscionable. A woman lost her life at the hands of ICE agents operating in our neighborhoods where witness accounts don’t align with DHS’, and there is no justification for the level of force that continues to be deployed against our communities. Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of the Minneapolis woman whose life was unjustly taken away.

What occurred today is not a stand-alone incident. It comes on the heels of the Trump Administration dispatching more than 2,000 ICE agents to the Twin Cities — the largest DHS operation in history. ICE has absolutely no place in residential neighborhoods. Families deserve to feel safe and protected, and not attacked as a result of divisive rhetoric that incites hate. This moment demands accountability and transparency, and there must be an investigation. [[link removed]]

We demand an immediate, independent investigation into this shooting, full transparency from DHS, and accountability for every official responsible for creating these conditions. No community in America should be subjected to violence or intimidation simply for existing.

We urge Congress to meet its constitutional obligations by holding ICE and the Department of Homeland Security accountable for placing communities in danger, and we echo the calls from local leaders for ICE to leave Minneapolis.” [[link removed]]
