Dear MoveOn member,
Donald Trump’s attack of Venezuela could lead to the Iraq War all over again—an endless war meant to enrich Big Oil.
And Trump isn’t even hiding his motives. Trump said in a press conference that he would have “very large United States oil companies—the biggest anywhere in the world—go in.”1
“Let’s start making money,” Trump said.2
John, this could be the Iraq War 2.0. A warmongering president recklessly attacking a sovereign country to enrich oil tycoons and fossil fuel corporations—all when Americans cannot even afford groceries, rent, and health care.
This moment is a test. Trump and his advisers will be looking to see Americans' reactions to this horror. Any silence will be seen as acceptance. That’s why we must loudly push back against more endless war. Because if we don’t, the Trump administration will escalate this violence not just in Venezuela, but across the globe.
Importantly, Trump’s illegal attack—and now his threats to invade Colombia, Cuba, Greenland, and elsewhere next—could split the MAGA base, giving us a real opportunity to pressure Congress to stop Trump NOW.3
MoveOn has already sprung into action, launching a petition to tell Congress and the president: “No U.S. Occupation of Venezuela!” and hosting a mass call alongside progressive partners for thousands of activists to get involved in the fight.4
Now, we’re ratcheting up the pressure. MoveOn is launching an emergency campaign to put up mobile billboards in Washington, D.C., and key places across the country to quickly ramp up pressure on Congress to stop Trump from occupying Venezuela.
We know the economy is rough and many are struggling to afford the basics. But if you can afford it, will you join the effort to stop us from entering yet another illegal forever war by making a $9 donation today to help us urgently put up mobile billboards to pressure Congress to rein Trump in? (If you have saved your payment information with ActBlue, your donation will go straight through.)
Trump keeps telling us that he’s going to stop endless wars and lower costs. Now, he’s spending millions in taxpayer dollars to attack Venezuela and declare that the U.S. will now run Venezuela.
We remember the consequences of the Iraq War. We saw through George Bush’s lies and knew that war would only make everyone less safe. We were right.
Maduro is a dictator who oppressed his own people. Yet this operation has nothing to do with the Venezuelan people or Venezuelan freedom.
Instead, as Trump himself said, it is an attempt to build power and profit for the Trump administration and an oil industry that wants Venezuela's oil reserves.
Rather than focusing on the affordability crisis and taking action to enable people here at home to afford groceries or keep their health care, Trump is spending millions, and potentially billions, pursuing endless violence overseas. It must end.
John, you may feel powerless when it comes to war overseas, but that’s not true. The Iraq War protests fundamentally changed the politics of this country because of the mass outpouring of rage from people like you.
Over the coming days and weeks, many will tell us that this is too complicated and only experts should weigh in. They are wrong. They believe people like us should get shut out while oil executives and war manufacturers prioritize profit over people.
Not everyone is in a position to donate right now, and that's OK. But if you can, will you join the effort to stop us from entering yet another illegal forever war by making a $9 donation today? (If you have saved your payment information with ActBlue, your donation will go straight through.)
Thanks for all you do.
