Just days into 2026 and Donald Trump shattered any hope for a more peaceful and reconciliatory year ahead. After months of illegally attacking fishing boats in the Caribbean under the bogus guise of a war on drugs, and building up a huge military presence off the coast of Venezuela – including nuclear-capable B52 long-range bombers - the US carried out illegal military strikes on the country and kidnapped its President, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife.

On Monday, CND joined over 2,000 people in Downing Street, calling for international law to be respected and for the US to end its threats to the country.

Watch and share CND General Secretary Sophie Bolt’s speech from Monday’s demonstration on Instagram and Facebook.

Trump is now threatening the entire population with further strikes if they do not grant full access to Venezuela’s huge oil reserves. He is also threatening attacks against Cuba and other Latin American countries.

Trump is also intensifying his threats against Greenland, the autonomous territory in Denmark, a NATO member state, which is further destabilising Europe and increasing tensions with the US.

This illegal military action and threats to countries’ sovereignty is a very dangerous acceleration in Trump’s global war. We must all come together to oppose it.

CND webinar: Stopping Trump’s global war and new nuclear dangers

The attacks on Venezuela mark a serious acceleration in Trump’s global war for dominance. This is starkly laid out in the US National Security Strategy, which argues that the US needs to restore its “pre-eminence” in the world, with the “most robust, credible and modern nuclear deterrent”.

The British government is actively supporting Trump’s war drive, ramping up military spending and purchasing nuclear capable F-35A fighter jets to expand its own nuclear capability. This only ties Britain even closer to Trump’s reckless leadership.

These jets will be based at RAF Marham in Norfolk and form part of Starmer’s drive to be “war-ready” in a NATO war. CND is holding a webinar on Thursday 29 January called ‘Stopping Trump’s global war and new nuclear dangers’, where we will discuss Britain’s nuclear expansion in the context of Trump’s escalating military aggression, and how we can build the movement - globally and nationally - against it.

Challenging the war machine: Join CND at Declassified UK’s first ever summit

Since its foundation, Declassified UK’s investigations have sought to uncover the truth behind Britain’s global footprint and hold the government, its military and spy agencies, and the country’s biggest corporations to account. Recent investigations have exposed Britain’s role in Israel’s genocide in Gaza as well as shining a light on US military bases in Britain, which included the delivery of US nuclear weapons to RAF Lakenheath last summer.

Declassified’s journalism is vital to the work of CND and we’re delighted to be participating in its first-ever summit later this month, Challenging the War Machine. The event will bring together the Declassified team, campaigners and experts – for a day of debate and discussion for anyone interested in understanding Britain’s militarism, how it operates and how to challenge it.
