John xxxxxx,
I’m reaching out before I unplug for my daily workout to tell you a little about my routine, and why it’s important. And if you could chip in to my campaign while I get after it, I would be very grateful.
I take my physical fitness really seriously. Not just because of my physical health – but because of my mental health, too.
My morning workout is one of the rare times in my day when I get to put down the phone completely, so it’s become increasingly important to me over the years.
In my first few weeks as Governor, I was talking with my Chief of Staff about how I would fit workouts into my new schedule. I couldn’t just pop over to the gym anymore – I was the Governor of a state now.
My Chief reached out to the Naval Academy Superintendent, and to my surprise, they told me I could come by and work out anytime. I thought that was pretty perfect since it was right down the street from our new house.
I met with one of their strength trainers, who offered me a space to work out, but then he gave me an offer I simply could not turn down: If I wanted, I could join the midshipmen in their workouts, too. They welcomed me (not only the Governor, but also an Army guy!) without hesitation.
One day, swimming in the pool, I noticed while doing my laps that there were men lying at the bottom of the pool. When I asked the guys I was training with what was going on, they said those men were training to be Navy Seals. I’m no stranger to discipline, so let me tell you — these young men and women at the Naval Academy are the real deal.
So John xxxxxx, these morning workouts are vital to me. They keep me centered in the present. They challenge me in unexpected ways that help me show up better for it in my day job.
It’s important to have nonnegotiables in the routine. It’s why I’m unwilling to compromise on my physical fitness, and why I’ll always make time for my family and my faith every single day, no matter what.
So, whatever you’re working on this year – whether it’s building a new workout routine or prioritizing your mental health – commit to it. Protect that time. Make it nonnegotiable.
Elevate,
Wes
