** Hello, friends.
------------------------------------------------------------
Happy new year to all who celebrate.
2026 has already seen the surge of fascism intensify. This week, the Trump administration escalated attacks on Venezuela and ICE officers murdered a woman observing a raid in Minneapolis. The United States launched bombs across Caracas and kidnapped president Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores—all the while bragging that Cuba, Mexico, or Greenland could face US invasion next. Following the brutal shooting of a Minnesota woman filming immigration raids, protesters have taken to the streets in cities across the US to call, once more, for an end to ICE.
In Iran, a widespread popular movement has broken out once more against the Islamic Republic due to declining economic and living conditions. As people in over 78 cities have risen up, the Iranian government in turn cracked down on the movement and has heavily repressed protesters, reportedly killing 10 and arresting hundreds.
Despite the churn of the news cycle, one fact is consistent. Everywhere on earth, people will face the forces of power and fascism and insist that a different life is possible. Here we share two new articles analyzing our collective situation, and one call to take action and remember protesters murdered by police.

** The Attack on Venezuela and the Conflicts to Come
------------------------------------------------------------
The US government has a long history of imperialist interventions in Latin America, but the Trump regime’s program represents a departure from the past. As we argue in our new analysis ([link removed]) , Trump is fomenting war in Venezuela (and beyond) to stave off a domestic crisis. The attack on Venezuela is, in their own words, a show of force. But understood as a media operation, the attack on Venezuela is an attack on all of us: an effort to intimidate everyone who might resist the Trump regime, to make us accept that state violence will continue escalating whatever we do, to convince us that we are not the protagonists of our time.
** “Capitalism began in the midst of colonial plunder, and as profit margins decline throughout the global economy, governments are returning to this old-fashioned strategy of accumulation.”

** “The crisis of social reproduction is the focal point of the current protests, and their ultimate horizon is the reclaiming of life.”
------------------------------------------------------------
Starting on December 28, 2025, a new wave of protest broke out across Iran, triggered by economic distress and escalating to call for the toppling of the government. This is at least the fifth such movement in a decade, drawing on previous waves of labor unrest ([link removed]) and feminist ([link removed]) resistance. Yet within this uprising, the grassroots movement contends with reactionary monarchists, largely based outside Iran, who seek to win the backing of the United States and Israel to seize power.
The stakes are high. We owe it to grassroots movements in Iran to learn about them and support them, both because they are confronting a desperate situation and to ensure that a puppet regime serving Israel and the United States cannot come to power. Here, we present three perspectives ([link removed]) on the uprising of the past week and a half.

** To Struggle is to Remember!
------------------------------------------------------------
This is a call to remember.
We’ve published an article ([link removed]) announcing the third annual Day of the Forest Defender on January 18, 2026. This day commemorates the life of Tortuguita, murdered in Atlanta in 2023 by Georgia State Patrol officers. Tortuguita was killed while protesting the destruction of an urban forest to build a police training center.
“This January 18, take action to remember Tortuguita and all who have fallen in defense of the Earth. Organize a march, rally, or vigil. Gather with friends, comrades, and family to mourn and heal and grow stronger together. Plan an information session on those living on the run, under siege, or under surveillance. Host a power-mapping session about a local police foundation, a detention center, or a surveillance network. Organize a hike through a public park or forest and commit to defend that place from destruction.”

** What We’re Doing
------------------------------------------------------------
All of our projects are copyright free. We distribute them for free, or else, where that is impossible, sell print versions for the costs of production and delivery alone. We've been doing this work continuously for fully three decades. If you want to help us expand the scope of our efforts, you can support our projects financially ([link removed]) .
Since this is an all-volunteer project and we take no compensation for ourselves, we can make a little go a long way. If you have the means, consider making a one-time or recurring donation to us. Above all, though, the very best thing you can do for us and for the world is to put the information and skills we offer to use in your own efforts to change the world for the better.
See you in the streets.
