Venezuela and its democratic future belong to its people
The United States’ military attack on Venezuela and the abduction of Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores has shocked the world.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela, and condemn these actions, which not only undermine Venezuelan people's right to self-determination, but also blatantly violate international law, including the UN Charter and the US Constitution.
Now, the international community must act to ensure a just and peaceful transition to democracy in Venezuela – a future shaped by its people. This must include the release of all political prisoners, protection for journalists and activists, and accountability for the crimes committed by Venezuelan authorities. Those responsible for serious human rights violations must be investigated and brought to justice.
As human rights organisations in Latin America, including our colleagues in Brazil and South America, have warned, this new crisis could lead to further repression, especially for human rights defenders and political activists who have for years denounced and exposed the Maduro government’s crimes.
The US administration’s assertion that it is now ‘in charge’ of Venezuela also sets a dangerous precedent in the region, and around the world, paving the way for China, Russia, and other countries to act unilaterally without any consequences.
It’s time for governments and leaders around the world to unequivocally reaffirm their commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter. Failure to do so now will only serve to further weaken the international system that is meant to safeguard peace, justice, and the rights of all.
