FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
[ JAN 7 ] - Washington, DC – Today, Community Justice is deeply disturbed by reports that a civilian was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis during federal enforcement activities.
Local leaders and community members have expressed outrage at the presence and tactics of ICE agents, and Minnesota officials are urging calm as more information becomes available.
“This egregious incident highlights once again the urgent need for accountability, transparency, and oversight in federal law enforcement operations that disproportionately impact immigrant, Black, and Brown communities,” said José Alfaro , Executive Director, Community Justice.
Community Justice stands with all families and neighborhoods that are traumatized by violence tied to immigration enforcement.
We also recognize the grief and unanswered questions surrounding the fatal shooting of Keith Porter Jr. in Northridge, California on New Year’s Eve, when an off-duty ICE agent killed a 43-year-old local father during an encounter at his apartment.
These two separate but connected events underscore a pattern of federal agents acting with insufficient community safeguards and accountability. At this time, we call for support systems for impacted families and communities, including trauma resources and legal oversight.
We mourn every life lost to state violence and dedicate ourselves to justice that protects all communities, not just the powerful.
