| Hello John, With inflated Obamacare subsidies already expired, President Donald Trump has urged Republicans to expand access to pre-funded health savings accounts to bring down the rising cost of health care. The president said, “Let the money go directly to the people where they can buy their own health care.” That is music to our ears. Americans for Prosperity has been preaching that same approach for years. But some in Congress are still committed to bringing back the Covid-era Obamacare subsidies that just expired! This week, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on a bill that would massively expand Obamacare. Some claim it’s vital to making health care more affordable. But the opposite is true. Let me break down why: - Recall that during the pandemic, Democrats expanded Obamacare subsidies meant to help Americans get through Covid. Not once, but twice.
- Now they want to do it again. No Republican voted for these expansions, and they shouldn’t start now.
- The Biden-era changes to Obamacare made millionaires eligible for taxpayer subsidies and eliminated the requirement that everyone should contribute at least something to the cost of their coverage.
- Furthermore, every penny of the subsidies went straight to insurance companies rather than to patients.
It gets worse: During the first two years of the handouts’ existence, Obamacare enrollment doubled, and millions of “phantom enrollees” were enrolled who never used their health insurance. Many enrollments were fraudulent, as confirmed by the Paragon Health Institute and the Government Accountability Office. While the subsidies have returned to 2020 levels, they remain extremely generous, covering 80%, on average, of the cost of a health insurance policy. Here’s the bottom line: Instead of doubling down on failure, Congress should enact free-market reforms that reduce prices by empowering patients to drive competition. Instead of more taxpayer subsidies, Congress should give Americans a Personal Option: reliable, hassle-free health care you can afford. Reinstating the expired handouts would not make health care affordable — it would only mask Obamacare’s failures. Indeed, as President Trump said: “The only losers will be insurance companies that have gotten rich. … They will not be happy, but that’s OK with me because you, the people, are finally going to be getting great health care at a lower cost.” Amen to that. We will be making a major effort to finally and completely end this Biden-era policy, which has been a too-costly and fraud-prone use of your tax dollars, and we’d like your help. Sign the petition to let Washington know that you oppose extending Joe Biden’s inflated Obamacare subsidies. |
