John, In case you missed it, there was an important moment in Washington a few weeks ago that’s worth revisiting — especially as the Virginia General Assembly begins its session. According to Punchbowl News, Congressman Rob Wittman directly confronted Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger during a Virginia delegation meeting over Democrats’ plans to overturn Virginia’s independent redistricting system and redraw the state’s congressional map mid-decade. Here’s what stood out from that meeting: |
• Democrats openly discussed targeting VA-01 and other GOP-held seats • Virginia Democrats are pushing to sidestep the independent commission voters approved in 2020 • Some Democrats are floating extreme maps — as aggressive as 10D-1R • Rob challenged Spanberger on her past public support for fair, independent maps |
Rob was clear then — and he’s clear now: Virginia is not a one-party state, and politicians should not be allowed to redraw districts behind closed doors for political advantage. As Rob said afterward: |
“The people overwhelmingly adopted independent redistricting in 2020, and I firmly believe that is still what is best for our Commonwealth.” |
As the General Assembly debates redistricting this month, that exchange matters more than ever. The threat to fair maps — and to VA-01 — didn’t disappear. It’s moving closer to reality. That’s why early support and engagement matter right now — before decisions are locked in. |
Thank you for staying informed and standing up for fairness, Team Wittman
