I’m Oregon Congresswoman Janelle Bynum. In 2024, I became the first Black woman ever elected to represent our state in Congress when I flipped one of the most competitive seats in the entire country from red to blue. That win didn’t happen by accident. It happened because Emerge invests deeply, strategically, and intentionally in women who are ready to lead with signature programs like Seated Together.

Seated Together is Emerge’s advanced leadership program designed specifically to address the barriers Black women face when running for higher office.

When I joined Seated Together, I got the training, clarity, and support network I needed — a group of Black women candidates who helped me sharpen my message, become relentless in fundraising, and stay grounded in my “why.”

And the results speak for themselves: Seated Together has produced three members of Congress.

Every day in Congress, I see how urgently we need more women — especially Black women — in these rooms.
