Ever notice how big-box stores have giant flat roofs and enormous parking lots? Isn't that a great place for solar panels?

No superstore has more solar-friendly rooftop space than Walmart.

America's big-box stores have enough space for solar to generate all the electricity needed for 8 million average homes.[1]

So we're calling on Walmart to commit to installing solar panels on every viable rooftop by 2035.

With more than 5,000 locations and 780 million combined square feet of rooftop space in the U.S., Walmart's untapped solar potential is enormous.[2,3]

It just makes sense. The typical Walmart superstore is about the size of three football fields, and most of that space is completely free of tree cover and perfect for rooftop solar.[4]

Solar panels on Walmart's flat, often-sunny rooftops could provide local energy that's good for the environment.

And it's good for the company too -- Walmart's existing solar installations have already saved the company more than $1 million, and its installations in California are expected to provide between 20% to 30% of each location's electricity needs.[5]

To Walmart's credit, the company has already begun taking action.

In 2014, Walmart set a goal of installing nearly 500 on-site solar projects by 2020. As of 2019, the company was America's second-largest business installer of on-site solar.[6]

Most recently, Walmart outlined plans to support 10 gigawatts' worth of clean projects, including two gigawatts of community solar, by 2030. (Having trouble picturing how much a gigawatt is? 10 gigawatts could power the equivalent of 2 million homes for a year).[7]

This is a good start, but we know Walmart can go even bigger on solar power.

With Walmart already moving in the right direction, our advocacy can help encourage Walmart to go further to deploy solar power in neighborhoods across America. Tell Walmart to go solar.
