The City of Harker Heights will temporarily change the disinfectant type used in our public water system as part of routine water quality maintenance. From February 1 through February 28, 2026, the Harker Heights Public Water System (PWS ID #0140023) will convert from chloramine to free chlorine. During this time, some residents may notice a slight change in the taste or odor of their water. This is normal and temporary. Public water systems are required to maintain proper disinfection to ensure safe drinking water. While chloramine is commonly used because it lasts longer in the system, a short-term switch to free chlorine, along with system flushing, helps clean distribution pipes, control bacterial growth, and maintain overall water quality. This temporary conversion is a standard maintenance practice and is not related to a water quality violation.
