After four months of relentless attacks on speedboats allegedly transporting narcotics in the Caribbean and the Pacific leading to over 115 extrajudicial killings, on January 3rd, 2026, the US military escalated their intervention with the capture of the Venezuelan president and his wife in Caracas.
The US Constitution grants Congress the sole power to declare war. Nevertheless, Congress has never been consulted since the beginning of the US military deployment in the region. Senators Kaine, Paul, Schumer and Schiff reintroduced a Joint Resolution in the Senate on December 3rd. A vote on this bill is expected this Thursday, January 8th.
