Advocacy Update - Transit-Only Lanes

Double Your Impact for Better Transit!

Caltrain Funding Measure

Meet Our Members - Part 2

Advocacy Update - Transit-Only Lanes

Last month, thanks to our members' public comments, petition signatures, and meetings with supervisors, the SFMTA board approved new transit priority lanes on the 14, 19, 43, and the 44!

SFMTA is also preparing to return rail service in August, and the new configuration requires changes to the streets at West Portal and at Church & Market St.

As these projects move forward, here are some opportunities to learn more and to continue speaking up for transit priority:

Additionally, SFMTA has already proposed the *next round* of piloted transit lanes on the 1 California, 5 Fulton, 24 Divisadero, and 38 Geary. If you haven’t, please sign our petition to help us support transit priority lanes.

Double Your Impact for Better Transit!

If you become a member during July's Membership Month, our board members will match your contribution, so join today to double your impact! Every donation toward our $5,000 fundraising goal this month will come back twofold to support needed transit advocacy in San Francisco.

The challenges Muni faces today will impact our transportation system for years to come. As the only organization speaking up for riders in San Francisco, we're uniquely positioned to make Muni the world class transit system we know it can be.

Please join today: help bring our transit system back from this crisis stronger and better able to serve all riders.

Caltrain Funding Measure

The clock is ticking to get a measure to fund Caltrain with a 1/8-cent sales tax on November’s ballot.

Sales taxes are not an ideal way to fund transit because they can burden lower-income people more than higher-income people. However, Caltrain is vital to the Bay Area’s economic recovery and the long-term good of the region - it needs a dedicated funding source now to ensure a strong future.

We also need to increase the pot of regional transit funding to ensure a strong recovery. If passed by voters in November, this measure would return an estimated $15.6 million back to Muni.

There are ongoing debates about Caltrain's governance. What we need now is an agreement between the three counties so that the voters have a chance to support funding for Caltrain in November. San Francisco's Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote on the matter next Tuesday, July 28. Stay tuned for more details.

Meet our Members - part 2!

B-Rod is a Community Organizer with SFTR, “working to connect with folx in District 6 to understand better the needs of members of that community regarding transit priorities.” They are also working as a DreamSF Fellow “to protect, secure, and advance the rights of immigrants here in the city”.

“I am passionate about community organizing given that I truly believe that individuals' lives can be improved by building community and using our voice. I am really proud of the work that SFTR has been doing to educate folks on recent transit related policy changes such as the emergency transit-only lanes approved in the SFMTA meeting this month.”

Grace Pang is a Community Organizer with SFTR doing outreach in District 4. I care about advocating for transit riders because without public transit I wouldn't have been able to access public schooling, student employment, food and social services, and connections with my friends, family and community at large. As someone who is and has been dependent on public transit, it's important for me to be in this fight for sustainable recovery!”

Grace hopes to “continue using my education and developed skills to close equity gaps and build people power through critical communications and meaningful action."

Camille Guiriba is a SF Transit Riders Board Member and a transportation planner for SFCTA in her day job.
I see high quality transit as especially important for access to opportunities. It’s similar in many ways to education - both are public services. Both give people more access the better it is.” After college, Camille volunteered supporting people with mental illness in London. She saw how free bus passes “were important for them. They didn’t have jobs but with free transit they could access resources like vocational training programs and treatment for their conditions.”
