I spent part of my career in uniform teaching the Law of War to future officers. I made sure they understood the non-negotiable difference between strength and lawlessness.

Right now, that line is being violated in ways that should alarm every American.

What the president just ordered in Venezuela—launching an armed attack to capture a sovereign nation’s leader without Congressional authorization—was a direct violation of our Constitution. Nicolas Maduro is bad, but we are still a nation of laws.

Now, we are seeing renewed calls for the United States to seize control of Greenland. Treating a sovereign territory of Denmark, a NATO ally since 1949, like real estate to be freely bought, sold, or traded is reckless and a threat not only to the Alliance, but to peace with Europe.

For the first time in modern history, our European allies in the UK, France, Germany, and Italy are publicly opposing the United States as an aggressor against one of our own NATO partners.

American security depends upon the strength of our alliances and the consistency of our word. When we act as a lawless aggressor, we don't just lose moral standing—we put every American service member at risk and destabilize 80 years of peace

As a senior member of the Armed Services Committee, Senator Mike Rounds knows exactly how dangerous this is. Yet, he refuses to defend the Constitution or stand up for the rule of law. That is a failure of leadership and a betrayal of his oath.



We have already paid the price for forever wars and reckless foreign policy. Trillions of dollars. Countless lives. We cannot afford to sleepwalk into another conflict because fools in Washington think international law is just a suggestion.
