I remember the exact moment this photo was taken. It was 1993, on my Induction Day at the Naval Academy. I was so proud to be there, to have this chance to learn, work, and travel the world in service of my country.
The young woman in this photo never imagined she’d be a member of Congress.
She never imagined she’d be in the Capitol when it came under siege for the first time since the War of 1812.
Never in her wildest dreams did she expect to literally run for her life from a violent mob, or evacuate her office because a pipe bomb was discovered outside.
She expected to face danger when she joined the Navy. But the danger didn’t come from enemy ships or nuclear submarines. It came from the most unthinkable place, from the Commander-in-Chief.
I chose to serve on the January 6th Committee to hold the plotters accountable. I did so despite knowing it could cost me re-election.
I did it for the young woman in the photo who never wavered in her commitment to her country.
John, we came within an inch of losing our democracy on January 6th. I’ll never forget what I witnessed that day, the extraordinary courage of our Capitol police and many of my colleagues—nor the extraordinary cowardice of our president and his co-conspirators.
Today, I participated in a January 6th hearing on the Hill because I refuse to let the truth of that tragic day be buried. I will speak out. I will stand up. I will remind America that our freedoms are not free, that it takes courage to protect them.
When we flip this district and put responsible patriots back in control of Congress, I’ll do everything in my power to defend your rights, protect your freedoms, and maintain the security of the United States.
Forward,
Elaine Luria
