And when Trump pardoned more than 1,500 convicted January 6th rioters and appointed people who praised or downplayed the attack to positions of power his message is unmistakable: Those who commit crimes that support the regime won't face consequences – they'll be rewarded. Multiple pardoned rioters have already been arrested for serious new crimes—conspiracy to murder FBI agents, child sexual abuse, deadly drunk driving crashes that killed innocent victims.
We've been on the frontlines of the anti fascist climate movement since 2017, and this is our fifth year fighting for accountability and truth in the wake of Trump's insurrection. In 2021, we demanded accountability for the corporations and politicians who had backed Trump’s unsuccessful coup. In 2022, we publicized the work of the January 6 select committee, which brought many facts and crimes to light as we we fought a resurgent global movement – including Trump – that connected fossil fuels and war. In 2023, as Trump returned as a Presidential candidate we tried (unsuccessfully) to ban fossil fueled fascists from the ballot and to get elected officials to take the threat seriously. And in 2024 we organized against a growing fossil fueled fascist movement that returned Trump to power, and tried (again, unsuccessfully) to lock in as much of the progress as we could from the Biden Administration.
This started five years ago on January 6, 2021, and since his reelection Trump's pardons for more than 1500 January 6 rioters—including violent offenders—have accelerated the decline of the United states into fossil fueled fascism. The message to future extremists is clear: violence works, and accountability is optional. We can't normalize this.
Speak up today for democracy, peaceful protest, and demand your elected officials refuse to fund violence, war, and militarism.
