The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was hard won by civil rights activists, like our hero Congressman John Lewis, who put their lives on the line to eradicate racial discrimination at the ballot box across the country.

But six years ago, a Supreme Court decision dismantled a huge part of the Voting Rights Act and stripped it of its effectiveness. Since then, we’ve seen increased rampant voter suppression take the form of voter ID laws, purged voter registration rolls, closed polling places, and more – especially in communities of color and states like Mississippi.

That’s why Democrats introduced a bill last year that would renew and expand the Voting Rights Act to actively prevent this kind of voter suppression.

Congress must restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act — by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act — because it is the right thing for all Americans.

Unfortunately, though this legislation passed in the House, it’s since been stalled in the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to bring it up for a vote.

In light of the recent passing of my friend and civil rights icon, John Lewis, there’s no better way to honor his legacy and lifelong fight for voting rights than by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act ahead of this year’s critical election.

Voting is the beating heart of our democracy, and we must ensure that everyone is heard at the ballot box.
