Friends,

Five years ago, a mob of insurrectionists — spurred on by Donald Trump — stormed the Capitol to try to stop the peaceful transition of power.

Police were beaten. Members of Congress ran for their lives, rushed from the Capitol Chamber, and told to hide and barricade themselves. It was a dark day in American history.

This happened because Donald Trump and his MAGA allies refused to accept the results of a free and fair election and egged them on with lie after lie claiming a stolen election.

He filed (and lost) more than 60 frivolous lawsuits challenging the election.

He personally pressured state election officials trying to get them to change official vote totals.

And he lied, again and again, to the American people.

Look, in 2020 I was California’s Secretary of State and the state’s chief elections official. I saw California administer an accessible, secure, and safe election that drew historic voter turnout.

But to this day, Trump continues to insist on the “Big Lie” that there was widespread voter fraud and that he won the 2020 election.

Friends, I’m not bringing all this up because I felt we needed a history lesson. I’m bringing this up because they’re planning to try to rig our midterm elections — and they’ve already started.

Trump has already tried to take control of elections from the states through an executive order.

Thankfully, much of it has been blocked by the courts, but he’s stacked the White House, DoJ, and the Department of Homeland Security with election-deniers and they’ve already threatened to try again or to even declare a national emergency to seize control.

This is all on top of Trump and his administration repeatedly pressuring states to redraw congressional districts to benefit Republicans ahead of the midterms.

He knows his policies (cutting health care for millions of Americans, massive tax breaks for the rich, masked government agents kidnapping people off the street…) are wildly unpopular, so he’s trying to rig the elections to stop a Democratic wave.

Friends, we cannot sit back and watch this happen. We have to fight for the future of our free and fair elections.

I am pressing the Office of Special Counsel to investigate the White House and the Department of Justice for brazenly engaging in partisan political campaigns in violation of the Hatch Act.

I’m also defending bipartisan state election administration, and I’m sounding the alarm on the floor of the Senate and everywhere I can to warn Americans about what’s going on.

I promise that as long as I have the privilege of representing you in the Senate, I will not waver in protecting and defending our democracy.
