Iran is facing a renewed wave of protests driven by economic hardship, currency collapse, and long-standing political grievances. The peaceful protests, spreading across numerous cities and provinces, represent legitimate expressions of public dissent protected under international human rights law. The state response, however, has raised serious concerns regarding violations of fundamental rights, including the right to life, freedom of peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, access to medical care, and protection from arbitrary detention.
Reports indicate that excessive and, in some cases, lethal force has been used against peaceful protesters, resulting in deaths and serious injuries. Medical neutrality has been undermined by interference with hospitals and intimidation of families and medical staff, while arbitrary arrests—including of young people, students, teachers, and civil society actors—have intensified.
These actions are incompatible with Iran’s binding obligations under international human rights law, particularly the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Peaceful protest is not a security threat; it is a protected civic right. The suppression of peaceful protests risks further loss of life, deepening social trauma, and long-term erosion of the rule of law.
National Iranian American Council stands in solidarity with those expressing their grievances through peaceful protest and calls on Iranian authorities to immediately cease the use of force against peaceful protesters, release those arbitrarily detained, ensure unhindered access to medical care, and initiate transparent, independent investigations into all deaths and serious injuries. Protecting the rights of peaceful protesters is essential to preventing further instability and to creating space for genuine dialogue and reform. The current crisis must be addressed through de-escalation, accountability, and respect for human rights, not repression or militarization.
At the same time, external military threats are not a solution. Statements suggesting possible U.S. military involvement—such as warnings issued by President Trump—risk escalation, civilian harm, and the closing of civic space inside Iran. War and violence would undermine and do not advance human rights. The Iranian people must be allowed to voice their grievances and demand a just and accountable government, free from repression at home and military coercion from abroad.
Human rights demand a clear and consistent approach: end the suppression of peaceful protests, protect lives and freedoms, reject war, and support Iranian-led movements grounded in dignity, accountability, and the rule of law.
