ago today, our democracy was violently attacked.
On January 6, 2021, a mob incited by Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol
to overturn an election he lost. The images are seared into history — and
they should still outrage us.
But this anniversary isn’t just about remembrance alone. It’s about what’s
happening right now.
In Trump’s second term, his judicial nominees are refusing to tell the
truth about January 6. Not equivocating. Not forgetting. Refusing.
When asked directly about the attack on the Capitol and the lie that
fueled it, one now-confirmed judge said this: “I was not present at the
U.S. Capitol at the time. I do not have personal knowledge of the
details.”
Shocking, right?
Trump has made the deal clear: if you want a lifetime seat on the federal
bench, you must prove your loyalty — by minimizing, excusing, or dodging
the truth about January 6.
And Senate Democrats are letting him get away with it. 18 Democratic
senators have voted to confirm at least one Trump judicial nominee who
refused to be honest about an attack on American democracy.
It's outrageous and it’s unacceptable.
January 6 was a test, and confirming judges who won’t even acknowledge the
truth about it is how we fail it.
