Mr. LaMalfa’s death at age 65 was sudden and unexpected. The cause of his death has not yet been confirmed.
Mr. LaMalfa, a fourth-generation rice farmer, was a stalwart Republican, a committed conservative who was highly regarded in his rural district. He won reelection in 2024 with 65% of the vote. In Congress, LaMalfa was a reliable advocate for limited, constitutionally grounded government, fiscal restraint, and lower taxes. His congressional district in Northern California was one of the five districts targeted in the Proposition 50 election. The future of that district and his office is uncertain.
Congressman LaMalfa was well liked on both sides of the aisle and earned consistent plaudits from colleagues for his expertise in agriculture, water, and forestry issues, and for his geniality. Last year Mr. LaMalfa was unanimously elected as Chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus, the second largest membership organization in Congress, focused on addressing rural issues.
Mr. Malfa’s death is a loss to the nation, to California, to his district, and to his family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. We mourn his departure.
