Five years ago today, the United States Capitol was attacked by Americans, incited and encouraged by a president who refused to accept the results of a free and fair election. It was one of the most shameful days in our nation’s history.

But Trump didn’t do it alone. 

He had extremist allies cheering him on, organizing, amplifying lies, and undermining faith in our democracy. 

One of the loudest and most extreme voices was that of my opponent Rep. Paul Gosar, who has gloated publicly about his role in leading a violent insurrection against America:

As a Navy veteran, I swore an oath to defend this country from enemies foreign and domestic. That oath didn’t expire when I took off the uniform. It still guides my convictions today.

On January 6th, Trump and Gosar violated their oaths. They attempted to subvert democracy and lead a violent assault on the heart of our government. They committed treason.

I still carry the images from that day. American flags turned into weapons. Police officers beaten. Our Capitol desecrated by Americans misled by madmen, criminals, and charlatans.

In another time in America, leaders who led violent insurrection against America might have faced real justice. But today, as the rule of law deteriorates under MAGA’s grip, it is up to us.

My upcoming election against Rep. Paul Gosar is much bigger than just another House race. It’s an opportunity for Democrats to defend democracy and bring justice to someone who violated his oath in the only way available to us right now; by defeating him at the ballot box.

That’s why I’m running and it is why I need you with me.
