I’ll never forget where I was on January 6th, 2021.

At that time, I was with the U.S. labor movement working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

I was deep in my work when my phone started to light up with text messages. I looked down to see a message: “They’re storming the Capitol.” 

I looked at the news and online and was horrified by what I saw. Not far from where I was, officers were being beaten with American flags, the windows of our Capitol were bashed in, violent insurrectionists marched through the Capitol rotunda.

The news anchor flashed to the tweets of Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, who was live tweeting the location of Nancy Pelosi, as if inviting the mob inside the capitol to assassinate her:

At that moment, it seemed like our nation was on the brink of collapse.

But as the smoke settled and Joe Biden was finally officially sworn in, I was relieved that the chaos was finally over.

The next day, Jan. 7th,  Speaker Pelosi addressed the labor movement on a virtual call. I’ll never forget her warning to us: Buckle up, buttercup. This is only the beginning.

It wasn’t until 2 years later that I would fully understand just how right she was. 

On the second anniversary of Jan. 6 in 2023, Republicans were electing the next Speaker of the House. The vote turned into a historic debacle, with the same MAGA extremists who were complicit in provoking the violent insurrection forcing 15 votes before Republicans finally bent to their will and elected Kevin McCarthy.

An image from that day is seared into my memory, a perfect encapsulation of the extremist wing of the Republican Party gaining complete control, and almost gloating about it on the anniversary of their insurrection against our government:

MAGA extremists Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Lauren Boebert being begged by their Republican colleagues to end the chaos of that day.

It was at this moment that I finally understood what Speaker Pelosi had warned about; the MAGA extremists were far from defeated, in fact, they were winning. And it was only going to get worse.

Fast forward to today, and we all see the violence, chaos, and lawlessness that MAGA has wrought on our country

That’s why I’m running to defeat Lauren Boebert. Although she has escaped justice for her part in the insurrection, if I defeat her at the ballot box, it will be poetic justice. And there is reason to hope: Out of the MAGA extremists in that photo, Gaetz and MTG are gone, only Boebert remains in Congress.  

And Boebert’s more vulnerable than ever. She is only in Congress because of 546 votes, and last time I ran against her, I had the best performance a Democrat has ever had in the history of this district.

Today marks five years since the Jan 6. insurrection, too long for those who incited it to escape justice. In 2026, we have a chance to finally bring justice and kick Lauren Boebert out of Congress for good.
