At that moment, it seemed like our nation was on the brink of collapse.
But as the smoke settled and Joe Biden was finally officially sworn in, I was relieved that the chaos was finally over.
The next day, Jan. 7th, Speaker Pelosi addressed the labor movement on a virtual call. I’ll never forget her warning to us: Buckle up, buttercup. This is only the beginning.
It wasn’t until 2 years later that I would fully understand just how right she was.
On the second anniversary of Jan. 6 in 2023, Republicans were electing the next Speaker of the House. The vote turned into a historic debacle, with the same MAGA extremists who were complicit in provoking the violent insurrection forcing 15 votes before Republicans finally bent to their will and elected Kevin McCarthy.
An image from that day is seared into my memory, a perfect encapsulation of the extremist wing of the Republican Party gaining complete control, and almost gloating about it on the anniversary of their insurrection against our government:
