John,Today marks five years since the violent insurrection at our Capitol – a day when our democracy was tested like never before.
Like many of you, I watched in shock and horror as a mob of extremists stormed the halls of government, threatened countless lives, and sought to undermine the integrity of our elections.
January 6th was just one of the many ways Donald Trump has assaulted our democracy, and since entering the White House once again, he has continued to find ways to undermine our Constitution.
His disregard for the rule of law, attacks on a free press, and abuse of executive power threaten the very foundations of our democracy.
Donald Trump has repeatedly placed personal loyalty above national interest, challenged the legitimacy of elections, and sought to weaken the checks and balances that protect our freedoms. Democracy requires leaders who respect the limits of their authority and the rights of the people, qualities Donald Trump has repeatedly failed to demonstrate.
And John, our democracy isn’t strengthened by looking away from moments like this. It’s strengthened by facing them head on and recommitting to the values that unite us.
In Congress, that’s exactly what I’m working toward every day: protecting the right to vote, defending the rule of law, and ensuring our government works for the people it was created to serve, not for Donald Trump.
