John,

As dialogue and debate surrounding the U.S. criminal justice system persist around the nation, I want to discuss the pervasive problem of recidivism. Too often, former inmates are thrust back into society with no support or resources, leading to high rates of inmates relapsing into criminal behavior.

Here at MCSO, we’re taking steps to reduce recidivism in our community. Our MOSAIC program helps inmates dealing with substance abuse seek help, work through trauma, and gain coping skills to stay sober. We also offer job and skills training programs in jails — including the opportunity to care for animals from the Maricopa Animal Safe Haven (MASH) facility — to help our incarcerated population be better prepared to re-adjust to life outside.

And it's working. Statistics show that participants in our programs are 20% less likely to return to jail than the general MCSO jail population. That's good for individuals and families, and also works to save taxpayer dollars.

Our community can only move forward if we all move forward. That’s why we’re working to provide the necessary resources to help those in jail break the cycle and excel.

I will continue to work toward a better future for all of Maricopa County’s residents. I hope you’ll join me by making a donation to my re-election campaign today, so we can continue to improve our community together.
