Like the rest of the Congress, I was there on January 6th, 2021, 5 years ago today.

I was there to perform my duty in counting the electoral votes won by Joe Biden, so he could be rightfully sworn in as President two weeks later.

I saw it firsthand: January 6th was a violent, pro-Trump insurrection, egged-on by Trump himself, with the goal of overturning the results of a democratic election.

Let’s not let MAGA try to rewrite history. It was not a small rally that got out of hand. It was not a patriotic display. It was an attempted coup and an unprecedented attack on American democracy from within.

But now that Trump is in office again, the simple truth is that he doesn’t need violent mobs like he had on January 6th to carry out his goal of tearing down our democracy.

In just one year in office, Trump has implemented over half of the Project 2025 agenda, and he’s done more than any President in history to consolidate power in his own hands at the expense of 250 years of checks and balances.

From turning ICE into a personal police force, to cracking down on free speech, to pursuing sham prosecutions of political enemies, to unconstitutionally defying Congress and the Courts time and time again, we are seeing Trump grow into his role as an autocratic, authoritarian leader who wishes to rule without opposition.

But here’s where the rubber meets the road. This November, the entire nation gets to have its say at the ballot box for the first time since Trump was reelected, and MAGA faces a big test for their fascist ambitions. Will Trump allow his party to face the growing discontent of the voters? Or will he do everything he can to stymie a free and fair election to protect his power?

Trump and Republicans have already carried out unprecedented mid-decade gerrymandering in states like Texas to protect their House majority. They are pushing to end vote-by-mail across the country in order to disenfranchise as many voters as possible. And they continue to spread the lies that undocumented immigrants vote, that voter fraud is widespread, and that the 2020 election was “stolen.”

What this means is that our progressive movement has to fight harder and win bigger than ever before. We must show without a shadow of doubt that the American people reject Trump’s wannabe-dictatorship and are ready for a Congress who will fight back.

If you want to be part of the mass movement for democracy that is gaining steam across the country, chip in to my campaign today. I am doing everything I can to lead the fight against this corrupt administration and rally Democrats to do everything in our power to push back. I need your help.
