It’s been five years since Jan. 6, 2021 – one of the darkest days in American history.

Five years ago today, a mob of insurrectionists attacked the US Capitol in an attempt to violently overturn the 2020 election results. Thanks to the brave efforts of Capitol Police, Congress was able to fulfill its constitutional duty to certify the Presidential election, but our nation and democracy were left shaken.

This attack realized our greatest fears since Donald Trump took office and threatened the very foundations that our country is founded on – that extremism could stop democracy and could destroy our nation.

That’s why New Dems got straight to work after January 6th to fight for our democracy:

* New Dem Members voted to impeach President Trump to hold him accountable for his role inciting the insurrections
* New Dem Members led legislation to investigate the January 6th attack and prevent another one
* New Dems endorsed voting rights legislation to strengthen our democracy
* New Dem Member Rep. Pete Aguilar served on the House Select Committee on the January 6th Attack, and their tireless efforts led to criminal referrals of Donald Trump to the Justice Department.

But the threats to our democracy go deeper than one day. Donald Trump and too many Republicans across the country continue to threaten political opponents with physical violence, imprisonment, and continue to sow distrust in our electoral system.

The fight to protect our democracy is far from over. And now, New Dems are fighting harder than ever to take away power from the dangerous far-right by electing Democrats and winning a Democratic House Majority.
