During this virtual event, journalists will share their stories and explain the latest dynamics inside newsrooms.
Since the beginning of 2025, journalists have been targeted by the government ([link removed]) for their reporting, the White House ([link removed]) and government agencies ([link removed]) are increasingly restricting press access, and the president is going after news outlets ([link removed]) that do not report favorably on his administration. Fittingly, today also marks the fifth anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, when a number of press were injured.
“It’s hard for any of us to function without reliable news,” said Adam Rose, deputy director of advocacy for Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), one of the groups sponsoring the event. “Good reporting can help you make informed choices in the ballot box, store aisles, and even the doctor’s office. But authoritarianism in our own country is threatening the reliability of this crucial information. Anyone who reads, watches, or listens to the news deserves to understand how these dynamics impact the information you consume. It’s best to hear directly from the people working to share it with you.”
“Democracy is only possible when journalists are allowed to freely and independently cover the administration, and that’s now under threat,” added Jon Schleuss, president of NewsGuild-CWA, another event sponsor. “Every American needs to stand up and support journalists at the local, state, and national level to make sure we continue to have a robust free press that can hold power to account.”
The national town hall is also sponsored by the National Writers Union, The NewsGuild-CWA, PEN America, Reporters Without Borders (RSF), and the National Association of Black Journalists. Join journalists, readers, and members of the public to come together in defense of press freedom — a conversation at a moment of crisis.
