Team,

It’s been five years since one of the darkest days for democracy in my lifetime.

The news stories we see today will reflect on January 6th as if it’s something in the rearview mirror, but that’s wrong. We’re still living through an ongoing, concerted attack on American democracy. We see it in our work at the NDRC each and every day.

An attempt to overthrow the will of the people can look like a riot at the Capitol, or it can look like a mid-decade conspiracy to redraw congressional maps across the country. The current gerrymandering crisis launched by Donald Trump stems from the same impulse as his desperate attempt to “find” votes in Georgia: A relentless pursuit of power and a flagrant disregard for representative democracy.

We saw on January 6th the lengths that Trump and his extremist allies will go to in order to keep their grip on power. And now that they are back in power, they have picked up right where they left off.

We say: Not on our watch. Not then, not now, not ever.

If you’re able, make a donation to help the NDRC defend our democracy from those who seek to undermine and attack it. Your support enables us to fight back against Donald Trump’s redistricting crisis and ensure that the will of the people prevails. [[link removed]]

On day one of his presidency, Donald Trump granted clemency to every criminally-charged January 6 insurrectionist. In doing so, he sent a clear message that attempting to violently overthrow the will of the people and undermine a free and fair election is not only tolerated by the president, but encouraged.

One former defense lawyer for January 6th rioters has been hired by the Trump administration to advise a “weaponization working group” in the Justice Department, writing a report that’s “re-examining” the January 6th attack and potentially going after the former Department of Justice officials who investigated and prosecuted January 6th cases in the first place.

For me, we must take a minute to mark this ugly anniversary because we can’t ever let Donald Trump sweep this under the rug. We can’t let his allies gaslight us about what happened on January 6th or what rioters were trying to do. We must hold the line against flagrant attacks on our democratic process, wherever they arise.

Make a donation today to ensure the NDRC can continue our democracy-defending work and protect the will of the people from anyone trying to thwart it. [[link removed]]

Thank you for being one of the millions of Americans who stood up to protect our democracy since that dark day five years ago. We are honored to stand alongside you in this work.
