Trump’s reckless military escalation in Venezuela – and we need to ratchet

President Trump made his intentions terrifyingly clear, saying that the
U.S. is going to “run” Venezuela, vowing there will be more attacks to
come and that he’s “not afraid of boots on the ground.” This isn’t just
tough talk. He’s openly threatening war and plans to seize the country’s
vast oil wealth – all without the authorization he is REQUIRED to get from
Congress.
Some members of Congress are fighting back, forcing a vote this week on a
bipartisan War Powers Resolution to block Trump from moving forward with
military action in Venezuela – unless Congress gives explicit
authorization. That’s the constitutional check our democracy demands.
Now, we need to flood Congress with public opposition to this illegal war
before the vote.

Let’s be crystal clear. U.S. military action in Venezuela isn’t about
drugs or democracy. Trump himself admitted it’s about controlling
Venezuela’s government – and its oil. History shows U.S. military
interventions have led to chaos, suffering, and generations of instability
– paid for by OUR tax dollars while Trump slashes our health care and
nutrition assistance.
The Venezuelan people have endured years of hardship. More war and foreign
intervention would only add to their suffering. Congress holds the power
to stop Trump in his tracks by passing the War Powers Resolution. But
Trump’s oil oligarchs and the war lobbyists are working overtime to push
lawmakers the other way.
Together, we can show Congress that the American people demand peace – not
another endless, oil-fueled war.
