Big, it’s Madeleine Dean.

Today marks five years since January 6th, 2021, when our nation’s Capitol was attacked by an armed American mob – incited by the repeated lies of an American president unwilling to accept defeat.

I was at the Capitol that day. I’ll never forget the terrifying sound of banging on the chamber doors, the panicked calls to my husband and my sons, and the violence that erupted as a result of the lies spread by Donald Trump.

The January 6th insurrection was a domestic terrorist attack — and it left a lasting pain in Congress. [[link removed]]

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, I served as an impeachment manager during Trump's second impeachment and fought to hold the President accountable for his part in the insurrection.

In the five years that have followed, Donald Trump and his allies have only gotten bolder in their attempts to undermine our democracy, and they’ve taken a wrecking ball – not only to the White House – but also to our freedoms and the rule of law. I’ve never given up on the fight to hold them accountable and uphold our country’s founding principles.

Today, we all have reason and a duty to recommit ourselves to the protection of our democracy so that our Constitution will endure for ourselves and for our children.
