Five years ago today, we were horrified by the violence at the Capitol unleashed by Donald Trump. Remember the crazed rioters breeching the Capitol. The Confederate flags and the makeshift gallows. Officers beaten with flagpoles and crushed in doorways. Congressional representatives hiding in terror. Chants to "Hang Mike Pence." This was the culmination of a rolling fascist coup to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

That this did not disqualify Trump from running for office again showed how easily the guardrails can fall. Trump's failed coup attempt was a dress rehearsal for far worse: a second Trump term backed by a regime that is even more brutal, lawless, and determined to consolidate fascist rule than before, a fascist regime that has proven it will not be restrained by laws, norms, or any standards of decency.

On his first day back in power, Trump pardoned over 1500 insurrectionists, and from day one he has worked to undermine and rig future elections.

Now Trump has crossed a new threshold with his illegal bombing of Venezuela and abduction of Nicolás Maduro. At the same time that this regime is unleashing war abroad, it is moving aggressively to crush dissent at home—branding anti-fascist protesters and political opponents as “domestic terrorists,” laying the groundwork for mass repression. The message is unmistakable: opposition, norms, and human life itself are obstacles to be crushed.

It was fascism five years ago when Trump made his coup attempt. It is fascism now, dangerously far along on the road to consolidation. Fascism is never legitimate. It must never be normalized. It must be opposed, not later, not quietly, but right now in the streets.
