John —
A new report by the Center for Public Integrity is raising alarm bells about the Federal Elections Committee, and it’s not looking good:
After the resignation of yet another Vice Chairmen, the FEC’s board of commissioners is down to three out of six — which is below the legal minimum.
That means the FEC can’t conduct meetings, make new rules, slap new fines on people who break the law, conduct audits and investigations, or even settle existing investigations with a vote. The FEC is functionally dead in the water.
Here’s why this is happening — traditionally, the FEC is a nonpartisan body. When Presidents nominate additional FEC commissioners, they usually nominate both a Democrat and a Republican. But Trump refused.
In a blatant attempt to politicize the board responsible for enforcing fair elections, Trump wouldn’t nominate a Democrat and instead chose to stall the entire process. That decision will leave the FEC toothless ahead of possibly the most contentious Presidential and Congressional elections of our lifetime.
But ensuring integrity in our elections simply isn’t a priority for the Republican Party. We need to stop them from stealing these elections by putting forward a powerful progressive slate that will inspire people to get out and vote in 2020.
In solidarity,
