John,
When Donald Trump promised to veto any COVID relief bill without cuts to Social Security’s dedicated funding, we launched an all-out campaign to force Congress to reject it. Current reports show that we’re winning―but Donald Trump is extremely fickle, and we must remain vigilant!
As Republicans drop their insistence on defunding Social Security, they’re replacing it with a different insidious attack on our earned benefits: Mitt Romney’s TRUST Act, which would create a closed-door, fast-track process to gut Social Security and Medicare.
The Republican package will be unveiled on Monday―but right now, Mitch McConnell says the TRUST Act is in it.1
Make no mistake: Social Security is not in crisis. It is independently financed by the very payroll taxes that Trump wants so badly to eliminate. But by slipping this fast-track process into this bill, Romney is exploiting a real crisis―a pandemic that’s claimed the lives of nearly 150,000 Americans―to achieve a long-held Wall Street goal to destroy Social Security.
We’ve got Trump’s favorite attack on the ropes. Now we need to stop this new, deadly proposal. Chip in $7 so we can go ALL OUT to STOP the TRUST Act!
Over the past week, to defeat Trump’s payroll tax proposal, we’ve been meeting with staff on Capitol Hill, and launched billboard advertisements to put pressure on vulnerable Senators like Susan Collins and Thom Tillis. Now we have to do it all again, to stop Mitt’s fast-track commission.
Remember: There’s no reason for Social Security or Medicare to have ANYTHING to do with this package. More than 40 million Americans are out of work, and their unemployment benefits are about to be slashed. Small business aid and rent moratoriums are about to expire. And 1,000 Americans are dying every day from the pandemic.
This is a disaster―But Republicans only see it as an opportunity. We’re going to stop them.
Chip in $7 today to stop the TRUST Act before Monday!!
Thanks,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
