Washington, D.C. | www.mpac.org ([link removed]) | January 05, 2026— For decades, our country has treated Latin America much like other regions where we’ve tried to call the shots. We’re told these actions are about defending democracy, fighting drugs, or stopping terrorism — but that’s rarely what actually happens. More often, the U.S. backs leaders who support geopolitical goals, not necessarily what’s best for the people living there.
The result has been painful and predictable: civil unrest, human rights abuses, armed groups forming in response, and countless families forced to flee their homes. These conflicts don’t make America safer or stronger; they create more suffering abroad and cost ordinary Americans at home.
The recent arrest of President Maduro in Venezuela shows how little has changed. President Trump once promised to end the “endless wars,” yet sending forces and claiming control over another nation’s oil and government looks a lot like the same old story. Calling it a legal action against a “drug dealer” doesn’t change what comes next — managing another country’s resources and economy, which always means more military spending and more risks. This intervention underscores broader geopolitical tensions: it seeks to limit Chinese influence in Latin American energy and counterbalance Iranian presence in global oil markets.
And let’s be clear: every time we stir up another conflict in Latin America, more families are forced to flee the chaos. This kind of intervention will only push more Venezuelans and others in the region to leave their homes in search of safety, many ending up at our southern border. In effect, our policies abroad often become the very cause of the migration pressures we struggle with here at home.
As these developments unfold, it’s concerning to see a lack of vocal leadership across the political spectrum. In moments like this, silence is not neutrality; it is complicity. The American people deserve leaders who will speak with courage and clarity about war, corruption, and the long-term consequences of our foreign policy decisions. This is not about partisan advantage; it’s about moral responsibility. Our nation must move beyond political calculation and demand a foreign policy rooted in accountability, transparency, and the protection of human dignity.
We need a US foreign policy grounded in American values, not short-term military gains that lead to growing costs for and irreparable damage to the average American.
